Kororā Kōrero
This project is run by the Ngā Motu Marine Reserve Society, Ngāti Te Whiti and Ngāti Mutunga to learn more about penguins in Taranaki
- Kororā / Little Blue Penguins (Eudyptula minor) are the the smallest penguins.
- They stand 25 - 40cm tall and weigh around 1 kilogram.
- Kororā only come ashore under the cover of darkness and may live unnoticed at Port Taranaki, buildings, or the coastal walkway, roosting in the rock walls.
- The breeding season is from July till mid-summer when the chicks have fledged. After that, the adults moult and cannot go to sea till they have a new waterproof coat.
- Visit our interactive maps about Taranaki kororā and the GPS tracking project. We also have night-vision videos on YouTube.
